Piapot First Nation Emergency Water Treatment Plant Project

Piapot First Nation , Saskatchewan

Featured partner : BCL Engineering Ltd . , an Englobe company

In October 2018 , a f ire destroyed the water treatment plant that served

the Piapot First Nation in Saskatchewan , leaving the community

without access to potable water or f ire protection , and creating an

immediate risk to public health . Leveraging a long - standing relationship

with the Nation , the BCL Engineering team was tasked with delivering

an emergency response and overseeing the design and construction

of both temporary and permanent water treatment solutions .

A fast ‑ tracked , multi ‑ phase approach allowed water service to be

restored quickly while longer - term infrastructure was developed .

Within 24 hours of the f ire , emergency systems were implemented to

restore a basic hygienic water supply . A temporary water treatment

facility was completed in just 3 . 5 months , signif icantly reducing

reliance on water trucks and re - establishing f ire protection . The

project ’ s f inal phase involved construction of a new , permanent water

treatment plant ; the plant was fully operational by October 2020 ,

two   years to the day after the f ire .

Sustainability and resilience were central to the project ’ s design .

The new facility incorporates biological f iltration to reduce chemical

use , energy - ef f icient systems that meet the Canadian Energy Code ,

and modular storage to enhance emergency capacity . Training for

local operators and a future - ready design further support long - term

operational sustainability and cost ef f iciency .

The project delivered lasting benef its to the Piapot First Nation ,

including reliable access to safe drinking water , improved community

safety , and local economic opportunities through employment

and reduced operating costs . The excellence of the BCL team ’ s

contributions to this project was recognized with the Brian Eckel

Award of Merit from the Association of Consulting Engineering

Companies –   Saskatchewan .
