Lorne Street Stormwater Management Project
Sackville , New Brunswick
The Lorne Street Stormwater Management Phase 3 project delivered
a connected , multi - pond stormwater system that strengthens f lood
protection , improves water quality , and enhances environmental
resilience for the town of Sackville . Designed as an integrated network ,
the completed system combines adaptive reuse of existing features
with new , naturalized infrastructure to create a sustainable and ef f icient
stormwater management approach .
A key element of the project was the transformation of an abandoned
quarry into a functional stormwater retention pond . Through the
construction of a new outlet , dyke , and outlet control structure , the
Englobe project team repurposed the former quarry into critical
municipal infrastructure that safely retains stormwater and regulates
downstream f lows . The system was further expanded with the
creation of a new , naturalized retention pond in the Charles Street
area , designed to work in coordination with existing stormwater
infrastructure on St . James Street .
The ponds are interconnected through a combination of underground
piping and a gently sloped open drainage channel , allowing controlled
conveyance while maintaining natural hydrologic function . Native
wetland and upland vegetation were incorporated throughout the
system to promote inf iltration , enhance habitats , and support water
quality improvement .
By strategically reusing previously disturbed lands and minimizing
impacts on sensitive ecosystems , the project delivers long - term
f lood mitigation while supporting biodiversity and future community
growth . The result is a resilient , future - forward stormwater solution
that protects the Sackville community and will enhance stormwater
management performance for decades to come .
