Solar farms: delivering renewable energy to Starland County
Alberta
Solar farm projects are booming in Canada, actively contributing to
a healthier, more sustainable energy transition. In 2021, Englobe was
tasked with optimizing the construction of a 25 MW solar farm in Michichi,
in the Starland County region of Alberta, just north of Drumheller, to make
it more economical, sustainable, and ef f icient.
The project involved the installation of 10,500 screw piles supporting
nearly 10,000 solar panels. Our Englobe team provided key input
during the pre-design, design, and quality control phases. To overcome
numerous, complex geotechnical challenges, our team developed a
tailored geotechnical strategy to facilitate installation of the piles and
move the project forward.
For this project, Englobe proudly established an equity partnership with
the Sawridge First Nation Cree people, whose traditional lands are home
to the solar farm. This partnership goes beyond a business arrangement
— it ref lects a shared commitment to collaboration, respect, and mutual
benef it. By working with the Sawridge First Nation, the team honored
their deep connection to the land while fostering economic opportunities
and sustainable development within their community.
Englobe’s contributions to the construction of solar farms like Michichi
are crucial to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring clean
energy production over a long operating life spanning several decades.
This substantial contribution helps to provide additional sources of clean,
renewable energy for the region’s 6,000 households, and more globally,
contributes to reducing Canada’s dependence on fossil fuels.
