Peninsula South Complete Streets (PSCS) Project
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Working with the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), Englobe’s Atlantic
Canada transportation team collaborated with colleagues across
the region to develop a functional plan and overall vision to improve
conditions for people walking, cycling and travelling on public transit
throughout the city’s Institutional District and adjacent neighbourhoods.
The plan, which was founded on an all-ages-and-abilities (AAA)
philosophy, included a bicycle facility, multi-use pathways, enhanced
pedestrian crossings, and improved transit elements.
Englobe’s recommended plan reduced dependency on vehicular
traf f ic and encouraged active transportation modes. It maintained
traditional accesses to a nearby hospital and the busy Port of Halifax
while facilitating the movement of residents, tourists, and visitors across
these vibrant neighbourhoods. In the end, this would result in increasing
economic benef its and reduced greenhouse gas emissions from
vehicular traf f ic.
This award-winning project demonstrates innovation and perseverance
in implementing challenging transportation programs and meeting
community needs, while considering the requirements of an exceptionally
broad range of stakeholders.
