Protecting a National Historic Site: Restoring the shoreline
around Fort Mississauga
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a picturesque town located on the shores
of Lake Ontario, at the mouth of the Niagara River. Known for its
wineries and summer theatre, the town also attracts visitors to the
Fort Mississauga National Historic Site, a large, square brick defensive
tower with star-shaped earthworks, set along the river’s shoreline.
In recent years, severe climate events have signif icantly eroded portions
of this shoreline, notably along a 400m-long strip of land by the Fort.
Englobe assembled a team of experts from of f ices across the country
to provide a long-term solution that would protect the area against a
1-in-100-year climate event and help to preserve the integrity of this
crucial National Historic Site. The team’s collaborative spirit and united
expertise combined to create a sustainable, robust design that will
protect the Lake Ontario shoreline from further erosion and enthrall
visitors to Fort Mississauga for decades to come.
