At Englobe, we believe internships are about more than just making photocopies or doing data entry.

These learning opportunities are valuable experiences to learn about how a business really works. Our goal is to provide mentorship in a variety of disciplines – from engineering and environmental sciences to marketing and more – so each student working with the Englobe team develops new skills that helps them land their future dream job.

As part of her program at Lakehead University, in Ontario, Human Resources Management student Abbey Engler jumped on an internship opportunity with our growing business. Through the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Program, she worked alongside the Englobe Communications and Marketing team over two semesters.

Before wrapping up her time with the Marcom team, Abbey took some time to reflect on her experience at Englobe.

The WIL Program for business students at Lakehead University seemed like a great opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the business sector. Once I was accepted into the Program, I knew I wanted to work with a local company, so I was very excited to be offered an internship at DST – a division of Englobe.

As a Human Resource Management student, I knew marketing and communications skills are important, so I was excited to learn more about the Marcom department.

During my time with Englobe, I completed a variety of tasks related to social media content development and strategy, as well as internal and external communications. I had never done this type of work outside of the classroom. Although I was nervous about pitching concepts at first, now I’m much more confident and have learned a variety of new skills.

I especially enjoyed seeing topics I covered in my classes, like content development and brand strategy, applied in a business environment. Additionally, it was rewarding to see projects I had worked on being transformed into content posted to Englobe’s platforms or incorporated into company strategies.

When I started this internship, I didn’t expect to be invited to attend so many important company meetings. I enjoyed being a part of these meetings, as I found them very informative and a great look at day-to-day life on a busy Marketing and Communications team.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked part of the year in the Thunder Bay, ON office, and the rest virtually from home. Although I enjoyed going into the office, working with a virtual team was a new experience for me. I gained a better understanding of working in a virtual environment with a team of people from across the country.

I enjoyed working with the Marcom team and participating in the weekly team meetings. The team completed many projects during my time there, and I always looked forward to the meetings because they were both educational, but also fun and lighthearted.

I’m very grateful for the chance to intern at Englobe, as nothing compares to this type of work experience. It gave me the opportunity to not only apply the skills I learned at school, but also learn new ones outside the classroom setting.
